PCS strike against job cuts

Labour Fight- We received this report yesterday from a PCS activist and would ask our readers to support the strikers at picket lines on the 3rd May:

PCS Union members of the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) are going on Strike on May 3rd against the likely loss of 177 jobs in Archway Tower. As a result, Archway Tower will close and such a detrimental impact will affect the local community, especially as the local pubs, shops and restaurants are facing financial difficulty in this economic climate. The OPG is responsible for looking after the money of the mentally incapaciated. Such an office closure will hit the Mental Health Services in Islington as well as the rest of London and the South East region where the majority of our clients are based. The Chief Executive intends to move all the office staff and services to Brimingham without proper meaningful and detailed consultation with PCS. Our PCS General Secretary, Mark Serwotka, has stated that such a relocation is the fastest move in the history of the civil service as all of our industrial regulations are being ignored. If this relocation goes ahead, many more disasters will be on the horizon with the disastrous cuts in public services. The Chief Executive has hardly provided much of an alternative option to this relocation that could result in compulsory redundancies since there are hardly any vacancies during this comprehensive spending review. But even worse, the Chief Executive is prepared to squander £22 million on relocation costs of which goes against the grain that cuts are necessary and prevent any costly exorbitance. The employer intends to start the relocations at the end of May. Therefore, your support would be vital on the morning of May 3rd outside Archway Tower. Other employers could copy this policy of ignoring industrial regulations to carry out deeper job cuts if we don’t resist heavily. Both Catherine West (leader of Islington council) and Jeremy Corbyn (MP for Islington North) are publicly supporting our campaign.
